LG NANO90 2021 vs NANO90 2020

LG NANO90 2021 and NANO90 2020 are the top models of LG NANO Cell LED TV Lineup. Just like their name, the NANO90 2021 is part of LG’s 2021 lineup while the NANO90 2020 is part of the LG’s 2020 lineup. Not as usual, LG give them with the same name. Although they have the same name, but there is a marker on their market name that distinguishes them. The NANO90 2021 has the suffix of UPA while the 2020 model has the suffix of UNA. As the newer model, the 2021 model brings slight improvement over the LG NANO 2020.

The LG NANO90 2020 and NANO902021 are good overall mid-range 4K TVs. Just like most models of LG LED TV lineup, they come with IPS panel that usually has low contrast ratio. Since they both have low contrast ratio, as long as you don’t use them in a dark room, the picture displayed on their screen looks fairly good. They both may have full array local dimming features, but it cannot significantly improve their contrast ratio. But on the other hand, the use of IPS panel makes them have wide viewing angle coverage. This is good for you who have a large room with wide seat setting for watching TV. Additionally, the support of HDMI 2.1, 120 Hz panel, VRR technology, and low input lags will please most gamers. They both also have good motion handling due they have quick pixel response time and good performance of BFI (Black Frame Insertion) technology.

In the market, LG NANO90 2021 and NANO2020 are equally available in 4 screen sizes variant. From the smallest, they come in 55 inches (55NANO90UPA vs 55NANO90UNA), 65 inches (65NANO90UPA vs 65NANO90UNA), 75 inches (75NANO90UPA vs 75NANO90UNA) and the biggest is 85 inches (86NANO90UPA vs 86NANO90UNA). And with the same screen size, the NANO 2021 is sold more expensive than the NANO90 2020. And it course is acceptable since the NANO90 2021 is a newer model and the replacement of the NANO90 2020. So, what improvements are brought by the NANO90 2021 over the predecessor?

Contrast

Since they both use IPS panel, they both have poor native contrast ratio. They both have around 1100:1 of contrast ratio only, this means it is not enough to produce deep black. They both actually have full array local dimming. But unfortunately, their local dimming cannot do much in improving their contrast ratio. With local dimming enable, their contrast ratio may be still increased, but the increasing is not much and their local dimming is still low, which is around 1200:1 for the NANO90 2021 and around 1700:1 for the NANO 2020. In a bright room, this may be not a problem. But in a dark room this will be a big issue since black produced by them will tend to look gray than really black. This certainly makes dark colors cannot be shown accurately.

Winner: NANO90 2020

Local Dimming Performance

As the expected from IPS panel, local dimming of the NANO90 2021 and NANO90 2020 cannot optimally wok in improving contrast. However, there is a difference characteristic brought by their local dimming. While the local dimming on the LG NANO90 2020 made everything brighter, the local dimming on the NANO90 2020 precisely crushes everything. It over-darkens scenes and causes bright highlights to lose details. Nevertheless, they both cannot handle blooming well. When showing a dark scene with small bright object, there is a much blooming around it, which can be distracting with subtitle. Overall, local dimming of the LG NANO90 2020 and NANO90 2021 is equally poor.

Winner Draw

SDR Peak Brightness

While in contrast ratio, the LG NANO90 doesn’t bring an improvement, in SDR peak brightness, it brings a significant improvement over the NANO90 2020 predecessor. With real content, the NANO 2021 is able to show highlight at close to 400 nits while the NANO90 2020 is only at around 250 nits. Meanwhile, with white windows test, their peak brightness vary depend on the content. But unlike most LED TVs with local dimming where the larger area is bright, the peak brightness is usually dimmer, on their screen, the larger area is bright, their peak brightness is brighter.  On 2% and 10% white window, for a short time, the NANO90 2020 might be able to get brighter where it hits around 420 nits and 520 nits. But even so, after stabilized, it drops around 200 and 250 nits. On the other hand, the NANO90 2021 hits around 280 nits 390 nits, but it can maintain its peak brightness for a long time. Just like on 2% and 10% white windows, on the 25% and 50%, white window, the NANO 2020 can hit around 400 nits and 330 nits for a short time, but after stabilized, its peak brightness drops to around 270 nits and 290 nits. On 100% white window of the entire screen is bright, their peak brightness is relatively consistent for a long time. Meanwhile, on the screen of the NANO 2021, on 25%, 50% and 100% window, its peak brightness is relatively consistent for a long time where it hits around 425 nits, 435 nits, and 440 nits.

Overall, the peak brightness of the NANO90 2021 is bright enough to overcome the glare in most bright room. Its peak brightness is relatively consistent for long time, which means it is good. On the other hand, peak brightness of the NANO90 2020 is only bright enough for dark to moderately lit room, while in bright room, it will be an issue with a glare. It is actually able to hit brighter peak brightness, but it cannot maintain its peak brightness for a long time and will quickly drop after stabilized.

Winner: NANO90 2021

HDR Peak Brightness

Just like their SDR peak brightness, the LG NANO90 2021 also can get brighter than the NANO90 2021. On the real content, the LG NANO90 can hit around 400 nits while the NANO90 2021 can hit around 150 nits brighter. But even so, their peak brightness also varies depending on the content. Both of them hit their peak brightness at 2% white window. For a short time, the NANO90 2021 is able to hit around 1150 nits while the NANO90 2020 hit around 650 nits. But unfortunately, after stabilized, the peak brightness of the 2021 model quickly drop to around 440 nits while peak brightness of the 2020 model drops to around 310 nits. On 2%, 25%, 50% and 100% white window, the NANO90 2021 hit around 575 nits, 910 nits, 560 nits, and 500 nits for a short time. But after stabilized, it drops to around 310 nits, 475 nits, 490 nits and 500 nits. On the other hand, the NANO90 2020 hit around 470 nits, 525 nits, 425 nits and 380 nits for a short time. But they drop quickly to around 225 nits, 350 nits, 370 nits, and 380 nits the longer they stay.

The LG NANO90 2021 might offer a bit improvement in their HDR peak brightness over the predecessor 2020 model. But even so, it cannot still make highlights really pop, so you will not get the benefit of HDR over the SDR. Keep in mind, all of these results are achieved when they are set on the “Cinema” Picture Mode, with “Contrast” and “Brightness” set to “Max” and “Local Dimming” to “Medium”. On the other setting like “Vivid” Picture Mode, they both might be able to get much brighter but this can cause the images loses their accuracy.

Winner: NANO90 2021

Color Gamut and Volume

As the successor of the NANO90 2020, the 2021 model precisely has worse color gamut than the predecessor. IN DCI P3, the color coverage of the NANO90 2021 may be still excellent, but in Rec.2020, its color gamut is a bit disappointing. IN DCI P3 xy and uv, the color gamut produced by the NANO90 2020 can cover around 86% and 93 5 while the NANO90 2021 cover around 81% and 90%. Just we have mentioned, color gamut of NANO90 2021 is still wide enough to deliver HDR images with cinematic color experience. And of course, the NANO90 2020 can do better. Meanwhile, in Rec.2020 xy and uv, the NANO90 2020 cover around 635 and 71 % of color space while the NANO90 2021 cover around 59% and 66% of color space. For HDR content that mastered in Rec.2020 like Dolby Vision, color gamut of the NANO90 2020 might be still acceptable but color gamut of the NANO90 2021 is not wide enough to show Dolby Vision image with excellent color experience.

NANO CELL Technology

Additionally, the LG NANO90 2020 also has better color volume then the NANO 2021. But even so, it is more caused that its color gamut is wider than the successor. Meanwhile, in general, since they both have low contrast ratio, they both cannot produce deep, dark colors well. Although they still can do a better job with brighter color, their limited HDR peak brightness makes them cannot produce bright saturated colors well.

Winner: NANO90 2020

Color Gradient

While the NANO90 2021 has a bit worse color gradient and color volume than the predecessor, it has much better color gradient than the NANO90 2020. As the top model of LG LED TV lineup, color gradient of the LG NANO90 2020 is very disappointed. There is noticeable banding in all colors and even worse in grays. Enabling its “Smooth Gradation” feature may be able to make its color gradients in real content is better, but this can cause some loss of fine details. On the other hand, color gradient of the NANO90 2021 is much better, especially in grays and reds. But even so, although there is still banding, but it should not be noticeable. But even so, if you feel banding still bother you, it also has “Smooth Gradation” feature that can help remove banding, but that comes at the cost of losing fine details.

Winner: NANO90 2021

Black and Gray Uniformity

The NANO90 2021 has a bit worse black uniformity than the predecessor. But in general, their black uniformity is not so good. On dark scene with white cross line at the center, with local dimming disabled, their entire screen looks purple due to their low contrast ratio. On the screen corner of the screen, there is also backlight bleed. With local dimming enable, the entire screen looks blacker but the uniformity is still not so good due there is intense blooming around white cross-line at the center.

While its black uniformity is not as good as the predecessor, the LG NANO90 2021 has a bit better gray uniformity than the predecessor. But even so, their difference is not too significant, and their gray uniformity is equally decent overall. When showing a full-gray screen, the edges of their screen is noticeably darker than the rest. Additionally, there is also dirty screen effect at the center. This certainly can get distracting during showing an object with large area of uniform color. Meanwhile, when the screen gets darker, their uniformity is better and much improved in dark scene.

Winner: NANO90 2020

Side Viewing Angle

Just like the expected, the use of IPS panel makes them have wide viewing angle coverage Black level of images displayed on their screen looks very consistent look up to around 70 degrees. Additionally, color also just started to shift at around 50 degrees off center and front. However, although they can maintain color from shifting at wide angle, color still look washed out started at narrower angle, which is around 25 degrees.  Additionally, just like LED TV with VA panel, the brightness of the images also will be decreased started at round 30 degrees off center. Overall, viewing angle coverage of the LG NANO90 2021 and NANO90 2020 might be better than LED TVs with standard OLED TVs, but it is still worse than OLED TV, even also worse than VA TV that has anti glare optical layer found on premium TV of Samsung lineup or Sony Lineup. Nevertheless, it is still acceptable for you who have large room or wide seating arrangement for watching movies.

Winner: Draw

Motion Handling

Pixel response time of the NANO90 2021 might not be as low as the predecessor where it has around 13 ms of response time while the NANO90 2020 has round 10 ms. But their difference doesn’t has significant impact on the fast moving images produced. Ignoring their difference, their pixel response time is great, low enough to make fast motion images looks very smooth on their screen. You may still notice some blur trail following fast moving object, but their motion appearance still looks good overall. And that is good is their low pixel response time doesn’t cause low frame content appears to stutter that much. Nevertheless, if you feel that stuttering still bother you when you are watching movies, you can interpolate it to 60 Hz or 120 Hz. You need to know, both of them has native 120 Hz refresh rate panel that makes them can interpolate low frame rate content to 60 Hz or 120 Hz.

Meanwhile, in addition native 120 Hz refresh rate panel, both of the LG NANO90 2020 and NANO90 2021 also supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) technology. At 4K resolution, the VRR features of the NANO90 2020 ranges between 48 Hz to 60 Hz while at 1080p and 1440p resolution, their VRR ranges between 20 Hz to 120 Hz. On the other hand, with 1080p and 1440p resolution, just like the predecessor, VRR technology of the NANO90 2021 is also able to range between 20 Hz to 120 Hz. But on 4K resolution, its VRR has wider range of frequency where it can range between 20 Hz to 120 Hz. And to improve their gaming experience, their VRR can works well with some gaming features like HDMI Forum VRR and FreeSync. However, while VRR of the 2020 model is not compatible with GSync, VRR of the NANO90 2021 is also compatible with GSync.

Meanwhile, to dim their backlight, both of the LG NANO90 2021 and NANO90 2020 use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) dimming system with the highest possible of dimming frequency is 960 Hz. Since they both use PWM, this can cause backlight flicker. But since they both flicker at very high frequency, you should not notice their backlight flicker. Special for the NANO90 2021, it has Game Optimizer picture mode. And enabling this feature will cause their dimming frequency drops to 120 Hz.

To help improve their motion appearance by matching the frame rate of content and dimming frequency, both of them have an optional BFI (Black Frame Insertion) mode. Their BFI mode can work well at 60 Hz and 120 Hz content. To enable their 120 Hz BFI mode, you just need to enable “Tru Motion”. Meanwhile, to enable their 60 Hz BFI mode, you must enable their “Motion Pro”.

Winner: NANO90 2021

Inputs

The LG NANO90 2021 and NANO90 are equipped with the same number of HDMI ports, which are 4 ports. All of their HDMI ports HDMI 2.0 Full bandwidth, HDCP 2.2, CEC, and ALLM. Their HDMI ports actually also supports HDMI 2.1, but not two ports (HDMI 3 and 4). Additionally, HDMI 2.1 supported by them is also not full bandwidth. Their HDMI 2.1 only has 40 Gbps instead of 48 Gbps required for full Bandwidth. But even so, it is still wide enough to cover HFR content that supported by them like 4K HDR @ 120 Hz. In addition 4K@ 120 Hz, they supports most of resolution including 1080p @ both 60 Hz and 120 Hz, 1440 at both 60 Hz and 120 Hz, 4K @ 60 Hz, 1080p @ 60 Hz @ 4:4:4, 4K @ 120 Hz @ 4:4:4, etc. Additionally, they both also support most resolution that supported by new a modern game console. With X Box X Series, they can do with all resolutions, including play with VRR and 4K @ 120 HZ @ 10 bit + HDR. Meanwhile, with PS%, they can also do with almost resolution, except 1440p @120 Hz or with VRR. Both of the LG NANO90 2020 and NANO90 2021 also have 1 HDMI ARC port (HDMI 3) that Also supports eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel), allowing them can pass high quality audio formats.

In addition 4 HDMI ports, they are also has 3 USB ports where all of them are USB 2.0 and they don’t have USB 3.0.  They both also support USB Drive Play back that means you can play HDR content via USB ports.  And although they don’t have USB 3.0, the bandwidth of USB 2.0 is still wide enough to cover most of contents supported by their USB Drive Playback. Both of them also have 1 Digital Audio Out (optical), 1 RF IN (Tuner In), and 1 Ethernet port. Special for the NANO90 2020, it also has AV In. And to connect to the internet or other device wirelessly, they both have built-in Wi-Fi 802.11 AC and Bluetooth 5.0.

Meanwhile, discussed about their input lags in Game Mode, the LG NANO90 2021 brings a bit improvement over the predecessor. For 60 fps games, whether it has 1080p, 1440p, or 4K resolution, the input lags of the NANO90 2020 is around 15 ms while the input lags of the NANO90 2021 is around 11 ms. Meanwhile, for 120 fps games, regardless the resolution, their input lags may be equally lower, but the NANO90 2021 still has lower input lag, which is around 5 ms while the NANO90 2020 is around 6 ms. And with VRR enabled, its input lags of NANO90 2021 has around 5 ms at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolution. For the NANO90 2020, at 1080p and 1400p with VRR, its input lags is similar to the successor, but at 4K resolution, its input lag is much higher, which is around 14 ms. This means, ignoring the superiority of the 2021 model, their input lags are great.

Winner: NANO90 2021

Audio Performance

Since the 65 inches and 55 inches variants of the LG NANO90 2020 has 2.0 speaker channel with 20 watts of total sound output while the 75 inches and 86 inches has 2.2 speaker channel with 40 watts of total sound output, this comparison is refer to their 2.2 speaker channels where it is same to the speaker channel of the NANO90 2021. Meanwhile, to improve your listening experience, both of them have the number of advanced audio features such as AI Sound, Dolby Vision, LG Sound Sync, WiSA Ready, etc.

Meanwhile, talking about their performance, sound performance of the LG NANO90 2021 is a bit better than the NANO90 2020 model. At maximal Volume, sound of the 2021 model can a bit get louder, which is around 93dB while the predecessor get around 90DB. But even so, sound produced still loud enough when used in large room or crowded room. Additionally, their sound profile is also equally well-balanced, which means it is good for dialogue. There is also decent amount of bass with a bit thump in sound produced by them, which is good. While the NANO90 2021 can get louder and has a bit better frequency response than the predecessor, the NANO90 2020 has better distortion performance. At moderate level, sound produced by NANO90 2021 may be not too much, but in the sound of NANO90 2020, its distortion is even almost inaudible. Meanwhile, at max volume, their distortion gets much worse. Nevertheless, it also depends on content and this should not be heard by most people.

Winner: NANO90 2021 can get louder, NANO90 2020 has better distortion performance

Smart TV Platform

WebOS 6.0 vs WebOS 5.0

As we see on comparison table above, as their smart TV platform, the LG NANO90 2020 runs WebOS 5.0 while the LG NANO90 2021 runs the newer version, which is WEBOS 6.0. The interface of the WEB.60 has been redesigned over the some previous versions. If the shortcuts on the interface of the WebOS 5.0 are laid out nicely as the ribbon on tiles at the bottom of home page, in the 6.0 version, its home page is fulfilled by Smart HUB with various widgets and apps.  Nevertheless, the new interface is still easy to use and feels fairly smooth, as easy and smooth as the previous version. Additionally, they both also don’t have any issues and bugs, which mean it is great. Additionally, in addition they come with interactive interface, both of these versions also has great selections of apps, whether their preinstalled apps or downloadable apps provided by its apps store called LG App Store. There are a lot of streaming apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc, Cast apps, Games, Web Browser, etc. Additionally, the WebOS also supports some voice navigation platforms. In addition its own platform called LG ThinQ AI that also acts as Smart Home Apps, they both also have built-in Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. There are also AirPlay 2, Apple Home Kit, and Home Dashboard that has almost the same function to SmartThing on Samsung’s TV.

Controller

LG Magic Remote 2020 vs 2021

Not only their smart TV that comes with newly redesigned, the NANO90 2021 also comes with newly redesigned LG’s magic remote. If the previous model comes with curved shape, the 2021 model has flat shape. Nevertheless, they have almost the same functionalities. The flagship feature like motion-controlled pointer and scroll wheel are still maintained in the newer model.  Additionally, they both also have built-in microphone that allows you to access Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. In the newer model, it even comes with more shortcuts buttons. If on the 2020 model, it only has two shortcut buttons for Netflix and Amazon Prime, on the 2021 model, it has six shortcut buttons for Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney +, LG Channel, Google Assistant, and Alexa. Both of these remotes also can act as universal remote, allowing you to control other devices connected on your LG TVs with these remotes, even if they don’t support HDMI CEC.

LG NANO90 2021 vs NANO90 2020 Performance

For Watching Movies

When used for watching movies in a dark room, performance of the LG NANO90 2021 and NANO90 2020 is very disappointed. Since their contrast ratio is low, they cannot produce deep black. Additionally, their black uniformity is also not so good. So, in a dark room, black of images will look tend to grey instead of really black. They both may have local dimming features, but it cannot do much in improving their contrast. This certainly makes darker colors cannot be shown accurately. Fortunately, in a brighter room, their performance is much better. Their wide color gamut makes colors of images looks fairly accurate on their screen. Additionally, they also have wide viewing angle coverage, suitable for you who have wide seating arrangements for watching movies. Meanwhile, their good 24p handling and images stuttering also allows you to watch movies with judder free and less screen stuttering.  Their good 4K-Upscaling engine also allows you to watch movies in 4K quality with fine details, even if the source has lower resolution. In general, as long as you don’t use to watch movies in a dark room, their performance is good.

Winner: Draw

TV Shows

When they are used for watching TV Shows in a bright room, their performance is equally very good. They may have excellent reflection handling, but since their SDR peak brightness is not so bright, in a bright room, you may get issue with glare. Their SDR peak brightness is only bright enough to fight the glare in moderately- lit or darker room. The other good point of them is that they both have wide viewing angle, which is good if you tend to walk around while watching your favorite show. And their well balanced sound profile allows you to watch TV Shows that rich dialogue with obvious and clean sound quality, even if in large or party room. Overall, they are good TVS for watching sports, but for this case, the NANO90 is better due it has bright SDR peak brightness.

Winner: NANO90 2021

Sports

The LG NANO90 2020 and NANO90 2021 are also good TVs for watching Sports. As long as you don’t use it to watch sports in a dark or very bright room, the picture produced looks well. Meanwhile, when playing fast sports, their low pixel response time and BFI mode makes fast moving images can be shown clearly and smoothly with almost no noticeable blur. Their wide viewing angle coverage is good for you who have often watches a big game with your friends or family. When you watch sports from cable box, they both also don’t have any issue up-scaling 720p content. However, when you watch sports with a large field that has uniform color like football or hockey, you may see dirty screen effect at the center of their screen. Overall, performance of the NANO90 2021 and NANO90 2020 when used for watching sports is good, but since the 2021 model has brighter SDR peak brightness, in brighter room,  the picture displayed on their screen will look more obvious than the predecessor.

Winner: NANO90 2021

Video Games

Both of them are also good TVs for games. In addition they have good motion handling that makes fast games looks very smooth on their screen, they also have good input lags, make them are very responsive for any games. Additionally, they both also have several features that specifically designed to improve their gaming performance like Game Optimizer, VRR, the support of FreeSync, GSync, HDMI Forum VRR, ALLM, the supports of advanced features of new games consoles, etc. That is not only that, they have two HDMI ports that supports HDMI 2.1, allowing you to play high quality games in high resolution like 4K HDR @ 120 Hz. All of them will improve your gaming experience. But even so, with one note, you are not gaming in a dark room. Since the NANO90 2021 has a bit lower input lags and already supports GSync, compare among them, it is better than the predecessor.

Winner: NANO90 2021

HDR Experience

Coming with the support of several HDR formats like HLG, Dolby Vision, and HDR 10, both of them are not able to deliver true cinematic HDR experience. Their low contrast ratio and not so good local dimming performance make them cannot deliver shadow details of HDR image as details they should in HDR. Additionally, their limited HDR peak brightness is also not bright enough to bring out highlights in HDR, especially most bright environment. With HDR content, they can only get a bit brighter than the SDR, so there are not many advantages you can get from HDR content over SDR content.  The only good point of HDR aspects delivered by them is about their color reproduction. They have very good coverage in DCI P3 color space commonly used by most HDR contents like HDR10. Although cannot be said good, their color coverage in Rec.2020 is also wide enough to make HDR content mastered in Rec.2020 like Dolby Vision looks colorfully. And their good color gradient allowing you to enjoy smooth color gradient without a lot of banding. Overall, their HDR performance is not so good. Nevertheless, since the NANO90 2021 has brighter HDR peak brightness and better color gradient, its HDR performance is better than the 2020 model.

Winner: NANO90 2021

Conclusion

As we have discussed a lot above, as a newer model, the LG NANO90 2021 brings some improvements over the predecessor like on their peak brightness, input lags, etc. But even so, on some other aspects, their performance is worse. Fortunately, its decrease in performance over the predecessor is not too significant. This makes the 2021 model is a bit better than predecessor for any usage. Whether they are for watching movies, sports, TV Shows, HDR content, and playing games, the LG NANO90 2021 is better. But keep in mind, their low contrast ratio makes them are not suitable when used in a dark room. On the contrary, their limited peak brightness also makes them are not suitable when used in a very bright room. This means, they both are only good for moderately-lit and dim room. Additionally, comes with several HDR formats, both the LG NANO90 2020 and 2021 also failed to present true Cinematic HDR experience in your room. But even so, overall, as long as you don’t use it in a dark room or very bright room, they both are good TVs for any usage. Which is a better choice between them? Considering their performance and picture quality, the NANO90 2021 is certainly better choice. But even so, since the price NANO90 2020 has cheaper price, the decision of course comes back to you according to own preferences and budget.
