LG BX or OLED BX is the cheapest model of LG’s 2020 OLED TV lineup. On the other hand, the LG B9 or OLED B9 is the predecessor, also the cheapest model of LG’s 2019 OLED TV Lineup. Features and Technologies of LG OLED B9 and OLED BX
LG OLED BX used the 2020 version of LG’s OLED panel while the LG OLED B9 used the 2019 version of LG’s OLED panel. But essentially, there is almost no improvement brought by the 2020 version over the 2019 version. With other words, their technical platforms are almost same, even if compared to the higher series. As we have known, each of pixel of OLED panel can individually can emit its own light and switch on/off/dim without influenced by the condition of other pixels surround. Meanwhile, unlike LED Panel that use RGB sub-pixel, their OLED panel use WRGB where there is an additional white sub-pixel for improving their peak brightness.
As their image processor, The LG OLED BX is powered by Alpha 7 Gen 3 image processor, the third generation of the Alpha 7 processors. It has lower specs than the Alpha 9 Gen found on its sibling LG OLED CX. This is also applied to the predecessor LG OLED B9 where it is powered by the Alpha 7 Gen 2 image processor instead Alpha 9 Gen 2 found on the LG OLED C9. The performance of the Alpha 7 Gen 3 of the LG BX may be still not as the image processor of the Alpha 9 Gen 3 of the LG CX, or even Alpha 9 Gen 2, but expected, it is better than the Alpha 7 Gen 2 of the LG B9. In this year, the Alpha 7 Gen 3 brought a new technology called Faced Enhancer that makes the LG OLED BX can represent skin tones and help faces to stand out from backgrounds. Additionally, although picture output of both of the Alpha 7 Gen 2 and Gen 3 is unlikely match the picture output of Alpha 9, it offers other advantage in price, make both of LG BX and B9 has more affordable price than the LG C9 or CX.
Just like other models of LG’s OLED TVs, both of the LG OLED BX and OLED B9 also have native 120 Hz refresh panel. This allows them can support any content with frame rate up to 120 Hz. Additionally, this also makes them can interpolate any content with lower frame rate up to 120 Hz. Meanwhile, in addition to native refresh rate panel, they both also already support Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology. With 1080p and 1440p resolution, their refresh rate ranges between 20 Hz – 120 Hz. Meanwhile, to improve their motion appearance, they both also have an optional BFI (Black Frame Insertion) mode called OLED Motion Pro. As we have known, since OLED panel doesn’t have backlight, their screen has flicker free, which means it is good. But even so, in certain condition, particularly when they are playing fast motion images with frame rate of 60 Hz or 120 Hz, the screen flicker is required to improve motion appearance. But even so, the highest frequency of their BFI mode is different. The OLED BX support both 60 Hz and 120 Hz BFI mode while the OLED B9 only supports 60 Hz BFI mode.
Just like other models of LG’s OLED TVs, they both are equipped with 4 HDMI ports as their major connectivity. All of their HDMI ports already support HDMI 2.0 Full bandwidth, CEC, HDCP 2.2, and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). Additionally, one of their HDMI port (HDMI 2 for LG B9 and HDMI 3 for LG BX) also support ARC (Audio Return Channel) and eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel). The difference is the support of HDMI 2.1 where all of HDMI ports of LG OLED B9 already support HDMI 2.1 while on the LG BX, there are only HDMI 3 and 4 which support HDMI 2.1. Although they both support HDM 2.1 but they both don’t support full bandwidth. They both only support 40 Gbps instead of 48 Gbps required for full bandwidth. But even so, it is still capable of 4k @ 120Hz @ 4:4:4 10-bit.
Additionally, they both also have 3 USB ports. But unfortunately, their USB Ports are only USB 2.0 and none of them are USB 3.0. As we have known, USB 3.0 can transfer data faster than the USB 2.0. Nevertheless, the bandwidth of USB 2.0 is more than enough to play video file, music file, etc. In addition to USB and HDMI ports, they both have 1 Composite In, 1 RF In (Tuner), 1 Digital Audio Optical, 1 Analog Audio Out (Mini Jack 3.5 mm) and 1 Ethernet port. Meanwhile, to connect wirelessly, they both are equipped with built-In Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
LG OLED BX vs OLED B9 Performance
Black Level and Contrast
In term of Black Level and contrast, performance of all models of OLED TVs including LG OLED BX and OLED B9 is not much different. Since OLED panel doesn’t have backlight and each of its pixels can switch on/off/dim individually without affected by the condition of other pixels surrounding, this allows the there is no light at all when they are showing black. The result, black produced by both is nearly perfect. Additionally, without backlight, this also makes their black uniformity is also nearly perfect. Combination of the perfect black and excellent black uniformity makes dark scene of images displayed on their screen looks very excellent, especially when they are showing HDR images. Additionally, their individual self lighting pixel also makes small highlight in a dark scene can be shown very focused without blooming surrounding, which means it is good for movies with a subtitle.
SDR Peak Brightness
Even though the LG OLED BX is a newer model than the OLED B9, but it didn’t bring an upgrade in its SDR peak brightness. Its SDR peak brightness is even worse than its predecessor. With real content, the LG OLED B9 can hit around 325 nits while OLED BX hit around 40 nits less bright. Additionally, with windows test, peak brightness reached by the LG BX is also not as bright as the LG B9. On 2% window (2% of screen is bright while the rest is dark), the OLED B9 is able to hits around 400 nits while the LG BX hit around 320 nits only. On 10%, 25%, 50%, and 100% window, the LG B9 also can get brighter where it hit around 400 nits, 375 nits, 320 nits and 200 nits while the LG BX hit around 380 nits, 350 nits, 275 nits, and 130 nits. We can observe from this behavior, the larger area of the screen get bright, their peak brightness is dimmer. This is due its brightness is dimmed by their ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter)to prevent the excessive power consumption. Overall, SDR peak brightness of the LG OLED B9 is brighter, makes it is can better combat the glare than the LG BX when they are used in a brighter room. But even so, in general, their peak brightness is only bright enough to fight the glare in dim-moderately lit room, while in bright room with a lot of light, their peak brightness may be not bright enough.

HDR Peak Brightness
The HDR peak brightness of the LG OLED BX is not also better than the OLED B9, even worse. With real content, the LG OLED B9 is able to hit around 525 nits while the LG BX hit around 450 nits. Just like their SDR peak brightness, their HDR peak brightness is also depending on the content. The OLED B9 hit its highest peak brightness is on 2% and 10% window where it can hit around 600 nits and a bit drop after stabilized, which is around 580 nits. On the other hand, for a short time, the LG BX hit around 450 nits on 2% window and around 540 nits on 10% window. On other windows sizes, the LG B9 also can get brighter than LG BX. Can be ascertained, the LG B9 can show brighter HDR peak brightness than the LG BX. In general, their HDR peak brightness is only decent and may be not bright enough to truly bring out highlights in HDR, especially in a bright room. This performance is much below the LG CX or C9 that can hit their highest peak brightness at around 800 nits.

Color Gamut and Color Volume
Just like other model of OLED TVs, both of the LG OLED BX and OLED B9 have excellent color gamut. Their color gamut coverage in DCI P3 is outstanding where they both can cover around 96% of DCI P3 xy and around 98% of DCI P3 uv color space. This means, almost all colors of HDR images that mastered in DCI P3 color space like HDR10 images will be shown fairly accurate. Meanwhile, in Rec.2020, the LG BX cover a bit wider than the OLED B9. The LG BX can covers around 73% of REC.2020xy and around 77% of Rec.2020 uv while the LG B9 cover around 72% of Rec.2020 xy and 77% of Rec.202 uv. In addition to they have excellent color gamut, their color volume is also fairly good. Their infinite native contrast ratio makes them can produce deep dark shades of colors fairly well. But a bit unfortunately, their color volume on the bright colors is not so good. The use of white sub-pixel may make them can produce pure white, but on the other hand, it will de-saturate bright colors, making them cannot produce saturated bright colors. But even so, in general, combination of their excellent color gamut and good color volume can deliver vivid colors with HDR content.
Winner: OLED BX
While their color gamut and color gradient is almost similar, the color gradient of the LG OLED BX is not as good as the OLED B9. On the other hand, although the LG OLED B9 has good color gradient, but it is not as good as other models of LG’s OLED TV. On its screen, there is some noticeable banding in some certain colors. Even in normal content, they are still noticeable. Meanwhile, the color gradient of the LG OLED BX is even worse. There is some banding in every color, especially in dark shades of colors. This actually is not what we expect from OLED TV. They both have a feature called “Smooth Gradation” for removing banding. But unfortunately, this feature cannot do much to remove banding on the screen of LG BX. On the other hand, on the screen of OLED B9, set “Smooth Gradation” to low may not also improve much, but set it to “High” can remove banding significantly. Nevertheless, this can cause some loss of fine details in some scenes.

Side Viewing Angle
Just like other models of OLED TVs, both of the LG OLED BX and OLED B9 also have excellent side viewing angle coverage. Black level of images can be maintained up to around 70 degrees off center and front. Additionally, they both also can maintain brightness level of images up to wider than 60 degrees. This means, even though you watch TV from extremely side angle, black and brightness level of images displayed on their screen will look consistent. Meanwhile, color may still shift at around 30 degrees off center and front. It will also start to look washed out started at around 50 degrees, but this still is better than LED TVs, even with IPS panel. In general, when viewed from the side, the picture displayed on their screen will look not much different to when viewed from the center and front. This is very useful particularly for you who have a wide room with wide seating for watching TV.
Nearly instantaneous pixel response time becomes the other advantages of OLED TVs including LG OLED B9 and OLED BX. This makes motion looks very clear with almost no motion blur noticeable when they are playing fast moving images like fast movies or sports. Following fast moving object, there is only a very short trail that should not be noticeable for most people. But even so, this doesn’t mean its performance is perfect. The instantaneous pixel response time may make motion looks clearly but on the other hand this will cause image appear stutter, especially when they are playing low frame rate content like 24p movies. But even so, this can be overcome by enabling Motion Interpolation or Black Frame Insertion Mode.
Meanwhile, just we have mentioned above, to help make motion smoother, both of the LG OLED BX and OLED B9 have an optional BFI (Black Frame Insertion) mode. But even so, the LG B9 only supports 60 Hz BFI mode while the LG BX supports both 60 Hz and 120 Hz BFI mode. This difference will be pronounced particularly when they are playing 120 Hz content. To enable BFI mode on the OLED B9, you just need to enable “OLED Motion”. Meanwhile, to enable 60 Hz BFI mode on the OLED BX, you need to set “TruMotion” to “User” and “OLED Motion” to “High” while to enable its 120 HZ BFI mode, you just need to change “OLED Motion” setting to “Low” or “Medium”. But keep in mind, enabling their BFI mode make you cannot use GSync feature. Additionally, enabling their BFI mode also makes their screen flickers at 60 Hz or 120 Hz and for some people who sensitive to flicker, this may bother them.
Both of the LG OLED BX and OLED B9 can also do a great job when handling 24p judder. Regardless the source, they both can show movies with judder free. This means, no matter the source is native 24p movies like Blu-Ray or DVD movies, 24p movies from native apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc, 24p movies via 60i signal like movies from satellite TV, or even 24p movies via 60p signal like movies from streaming devices, you will watch them with judder-free. To remove all judder on the OLED B9, you just need to simply enable “Real Cinema”. Meanwhile, on OLED BX, in addition to enable “Real Cinema” you must also set “OLED Motion” to “Medium” or “Auto”.

Even though not as low as the LG CX or C9, both of the LG OLED BX and OLED B9 have good input lags in Game Mode”. Regardless the resolution, with 60 fps content, the input lags of LG OLED B9 is a round 14 ms while the OLED BX is around 15 ms. With 120 fps content, the input lag of the LG BX is around 6 ms on both 1080p and 1440p resolution while LG B9 is around 7 ms on both 1080p and 1440p resolution. At 4K resolution, the input lag of the OLED BX is also excellent, which is around 12 ms. Meanwhile, for the B(, it doesn’t support 4K @ 120 Hz. In VRR mode, their input lags are also excellent, which is around 6 ms at both 1080p and 1440p resolution. At 4K resolution, input lags of the OLED B9 is a bit lower, which is around 9 ms while the input lag of the LG BX is around 11 ms. Ignoring their difference, their input lags is low enough to make them responsively for any games, even for fast paced games. And with the support of some gaming features like GSync, HDMI Forum VRR, ALLM, etc, this certainly will be further pleased most gamers.
For Watching Movies
Since most people prefer watch movies in a dark room, a TV with excellent native contrast ratio is required. And both of the LG OLED BX and OLED B9 has infinite native contrast ratio that allows them can produce nearly perfect black. So, even though they both are set in a dark room, black of images will still look really black. Let alone they both also have excellent black uniformity and pixel dimming level that makes small highlight in a dark scene can be shown focused without blooming, this certainly makes dark scene looks excellent on their screen. Additionally, their ability to remove judder from any source also allows you to watch movies with judder-free. And even though their peak brightness is only decent, but in a dark room, it is bright enough to show bright scene fairly bright. Overall, their performance when used for watching movies is outstanding.

For Watching Sports
Both of the LG OLED BX and OLED B9 are also impressive TVs when used for watching sports. They both have nearly instantaneous pixel response time, allowing them to show fast sports clearly with almost motion blur. Additionally, their BFI mode also can help to improve motion appearance when they are playing 60 fps content. And coincidence, most sports have frame rate of 60 Hz. Although not too bright, but their peak brightness is also bright enough to combat the glare in dim to moderately lit room. And combined to their excellent reflection handling, this allows you to watch sports without bothered by glare and reflection. And their excellent side viewing angle ensure all of you to get the best viewing when you are watching sports with a group of your friend or family. But even so, since OLED B9 has a bit brighter SDR peak brightness, in brighter room, it can fight the glare better than the OLED Bx.

Both of the LG OLED B9 and OLED BX are also great TVs for playing video games. In addition they both have excellent picture quality and great motion handling, they both also have extremely low input lags in Game mode. So, even though you play fast paced games that require fast reflexes, you will play them responsively without feeling laggy. Not only that, they both also support VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) technology that compatible with some gaming features like HDMI Forum, GSync, etc, allowing you to play games without screen tearing. And the support of ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) makes them can automatically switch to game mode once there is compatible console is connected to them. So, when you want to play game, you don’t need to manually change to game mode. But as we might known, OLED panel has a risk to permanent burn-in, particularly when they are showing a static images for a long time. So, since every game has static image, play the same game over long time should be avoided.
As long as they are not set in a bright room, their performance in showing HDR images is also good. They both support HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision, allowing you to play any HDR content from any source. Additionally, their nearly perfect black level also makes dark scene of HDR images can also be shown excellent with more detail look. Their wide color gamut and color volume also makes most colors of HDR images can be shown fairly accurate, makes HDR images look colorfully with vivid color. Even though their color gradient is not as good as LG CX or C9, but you can still enjoy HDR images with smooth color gradient on their screen. But a bit unfortunately, their HDR peak brightness is not so bright particularly for LG OLED BX. In a dim room or moderately lit room, they both may still be able to bring out small highlight in HDR, but it is not when they are set in a bright room. Meanwhile, since the LG B9 has brighter HDR peak brightness, it small highlight will look more pop on its screen than on the screen of LG BX.

Both of the LG OLED BX and OLED B9 are a budget OLED TV that has good picture quality. Its picture quality is not much different to the other models of OLED TVS which sold hundreds or even thousands dollar more expensive, particularly on the aspects that influenced by their panel such as black level, pixel response time, side viewing angle, color gamut, etc. Meanwhile, compare between them, even though it is a newer model, but its performance and picture quality is not better than OLED B9, even in some aspects, it is worse. But even so, their difference is actually not too significant and doesn’t have a significant impact on their performance and picture quality. So, which is a better choice between them? Considering picture quality and performance, the LG B9 may be a bit better than the OLED BX. In addition it is better in some aspects, it also sold cheaper than the OLED BX.
