Samsung QN85B vs Q80B Review – What’s their difference?

he Samsung QN85B is the lowest-end model of the Samsung’s 2022 TV lineup that uses Neo QLED technology. On the other hand, the Samsung Q80B is the mid-end of Samsung’s 2022 TV lineup or the highest model of 2022 lineup that don’t come with Neo QLED technology. If we see their model number, we can easily guess that the QN85B is the successor of the QN85A while the Q80B is the successor of the Q80A. And coincidentally, among the variety model of Samsung’s 2022 TV lineup, only both that use ADS panel.  Its higher model like QN90B or QN95B uses VA panel while the lower model like Q70B and Q60B also uses VA panel. As we have known, ADS panel has similar characteristic to the IPS panel. Which means it has a wide viewing angle coverage, but on the other hand, its contrast ratio is poor.

Overall, both of the Samsung Q80B and QN85B are goods TV for each of their class. They have wide color gamut, so, they can produce vivid-and life-like HDR images. Both also have good motion handling, so fast motion images looks very smooth. To please most gamers, both have low input lags and come with some advance gaming features that further improve their gaming experience. Both also comes with excellent Tizen OS that has great selection of apps.

The Samsung QN85B only has 4 screen size variants, which are 55 inches (QN55QN85BAFXZA), 65 inches (QN65QN85BAFXZA), 75 inches (QN75QN85BAFXZAAFXZA), and 85 inches (QN85QN85BAFXZA). Meanwhile, the Samsung Q80B has one more screen size variant, which are 50 inches (QN50Q80BAFXZA), 55 inches (QN55Q80BAFXZA), 65 inches (QN65Q80BAFXZA), 75 inches (QN75Q80BAFXZA), and 85 inches (QN85Q80BAFXZA). However, there is a bit difference for their 85 inches variant and the 50 inches variant of the Q80B. Unlike the other variants that use ADS panel, these variants comes with VA Panel. And of course, there will be a difference in picture quality and performance, especially in contrast ratio and viewing angle coverage.

Since the QN85B is the step-up model of the Q80B, we can easily guess that the QN85B has better performance and more features than the Q80B. And we can also can guess that its price is also more expensive. The question, is the advantages of the QN85B is comparable with more money you will spend. Design of the Samsung Q80B and QN85B

At a glance, they look very similar. They supported by a stand that is mounted at the center. This makes them look a bit more like a monitor than TV. A bit difference between them is the base of their stand. The base stand of the QN85B is hexagonal while the Q80B is rectangle. Since they are supported at the center, there is wobble front back or side to side. But you don’t need to worry because they have been designed in such away in order to prevent the TV collapse. Meanwhile, the advantage is you don’t need a wide table when you want to put it on the table.

Both have very thin bezel, so they can into the décor of your room. Meanwhile, the QN85B has a bit thinner border than the Q80B. But in general, they border is fairly thin. Their back is made of plastic, but it has a bit difference in designed. Their back may have texture with horizontal lines, but there is a difference in colling air outlet. Additionally, the location of power plug is also different, but both are at the right of the stand.  However, their inputs are located at the same location, which is at the left of the stand. There are channels along the back and a space in the stand for basic cable management. Sadly, since they inputs are inset into the back of the TV, you will struggle to access them, mainly if they are mounted on the wall.

Dark Room Performance

Samsung QN85B is an ADS TV with the best contrast ratio, much better than the Q80B that also use ADS Panel and has local dimming feature.

As typical of a TV with IPS or Ads panel, both actually have low native contrast ratio, which is around 1100:1. However, both have local dimming feature that help to improve their contrast ratio. In here, the QN85B is much better than the Q80B. The local dimming feature of the QN85B is able to boost its contrast ratio up to more than 8000:1, resulting in very deep black. So, even if it is set in a dark room, black produced by the QN85B doesn’t look gray at all. On the other hand, although the Q80B also has local dimming feature, its local dimming is not able to boost its contrast ratio like on the QN85B. It is only slightly improved or even tend to be stagnant, which is around 1500:1. So, in a dark room, black produced by the Samsung Q80B will look tend to gray than really black.

Additionally, the Samsung Q85B also has better black uniformity thanks to its better local dimming performance.  When showing a dark window test with white crossline at the center, the screen looks black at any area. There may be some blooming around white crossline, but it is not very bad, or even is impressive for an IPS panel. On the other hand, black uniformity of the Samsung Q80B is disappointing. With the same test window, black look blue and there is tons of blooming around white crossline, and extending horizontally all the way to the edge.

In general, although not as good as TV with VA panel, performance of the Samsung QN85B in a dark room is very impressive for IPS TV. On the other hand, performance of the Samsung Q80B in a dark room is disappointing, not much different to most models with IPS panel.

Keep in mind, the 85 inches variant od the QN85B and the 50 inches and 85 inches variant of the Q80B use VA panel, so they have much better contrast ratio and black uniformity.

Bright Room Performance

The use of Neo QLED panel really makes the QN85B can deliver brighter peak brghtness then the Q80B

The use of mini-LED backlight really makes the Samsung QN85B is brighter than the Q80B that uses traditional QLED TV. With real SDR content, the Q85B can hits around 950 nits while the Q80B hits around 675 nits only. Since it has brighter SDR peak brightness, the QN85B has better performance of fighting the glare in most bright rooms.  Nevertheless, although not as bright as the QN85B, SDR peak brightness of the Q80B actually is also bright enough to fight the glare in most-well lit rooms. Sadly, larger bright scenes are dimmed considerably by their ABL. However, their dimmest peak brightness is still brighter than 500 nits, even the QN85B is still brighter than 650 nits, which is great.

Unfortunately, there is a bit change in their screen coating that makes their reflection handling is not as good as their predecessor.  You need to know, their predecessor QN85A or Q80A has outstanding reflection handling thanks to glossy screen coating. However, the QN85B and Q80B now comes with semi-gloss screen coating. This actually makes their reflection handling is not as good as their predecessor. Their semi-gloss coating diffuses reflections across the screen a bit, making them appear larger but less bright overall. So, Reflections from strong light sources like windows are a bit more distracting. Luckily, they have outstanding peak brightness. So, if you feel disturbed with a glare when watching TV in a bright room, you can increase their brightness level to overcome the glare.

Picture Quality

Both Samsung Q80B and QN85B have good image processor for processing images. Their 4K-upscaling engine has been based on AI. They also have deep learning machine to further improve their performance of up-scaling lower resolution content. And combination of their AI-based Up-scaling engine and deep learning machine makes their performance of up-scaling lower resolution content is really great. So, whether it is DVD movies with 480p resolution or sports on Cable TV with 720p resolution, the image produced looks very smooth without a lot of artifacts. Additionally, Blu Ray movies or other content with 1080p resolution looks almost as good as native 4K content. And of course, native 4K content is displayed perfectly without any issue. And the good point is the good picture quality displayed on their screen will look remain accurate from any angle thanks to their wide viewing angle coverage.

Color Reproduction

Besides they have wide color gamut, both also good out-of-the-box color accuracy

The Samsung QN85B and Q80B have good color reproduction overall. They have great coverage of commonly used DCI P3 color space, which is good for most current HDR. You need to know, in DCI P3 xy, the QN85B can cover around 87% while the Q80B cover around 90%. In DCI P3 uv color space, both can cover around 93%. Sadly, their color coverage in Rec.2020 is limited. In REC.2020 xy, the QN85B can cover around 65% and the Q80B cover around 65% only while in Rec.2020 uv, the QN85B cover around 72% while the Q80B cover around 70%. And since more content will start to use that color space, their limited coverage Rec.2020 makes them are not future-proof.

Both of them only have decent color volume. They may be able to well display their color gamut at various brightness level. And besides they can produce bright colors as bright pure white, they can also display dark colors well to. However, it is limited by their incomplete color gamut, especially in Rec.2020. Fortunately, both have great out-of-the-box color accuracy. So although they have decent color volume, they can display most colors of HDR images accurately, making HDR images looks vivid and life-like on their screen.

Besides they can produce accurate color of images, they also have good gradient handing. Although there may be some banding in certain shades of colors, especially in shades of green and grays, but they should not be noticeable in most contents. They also have “Noise Reduction” feature that can help to reduce banding. A bit unfortunately, this feature only works well with low-quality content. With high quality content, though, this can cause a loss of fine details.

Motion Handling

The Samsung Q80B and QN85B can also do a great job in handling fast motion. Their pixel response time is equally great, which is around 10 ms. This is low enough make fast motion images looks clear and smooth on their screen. There may be still few ghosting trails following fast moving object, but this should not be noticeable for most people. Blur that may be visible is more caused by persistence than its response time. However, their low response time cause low frame rate content appear to a bit stutter. So, you must enable their motion interpolation of BFI mode to solve this issue.

Just like most variants of Samsung’s 2022 TV lineup, to dim their backlight both use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) dimming system. The highest possible of their dimming frequency is 960 Hz when they are set in “Movie” mode or “Game” mode” with brightness level is below 40 and VRR enable. Except this, their dimming frequency is 120 Hz and in certainly setting, they even shut-off their PWM system. This is good because you will be hard to notice the flicker on their screen. Meanwhile, to further improve their motion appearance by reducing persistence blur, they have an optional BFI (Black Frame Insertion) mode. Both can flicker at 120 Hz or 60 Hz depending on the frame rate of the content.

The Samsung Q80B and QN85B are equipped with 4 HDMI ports. Their HDMI ports support most current HDMI features like HDCP 2.2, CEC, ALLM, and HDMI 2.0 full bandwidth. Their also have one HDMI ARC (HDMI 3) that also supports eARC, allowing them can passthrough high-quality audio format. That is not only that, all of their HDMI ports also already support HDMI 2.1 with bandwidth of 48 Gbps. This allows them can display HFR (High Frame Rate) content properly including high quality games supported by most modern console. This makes them is full compatible with PS 5 or Xbox X series, even for added VRR feature on PS 5.

Samsung Q80B vs QN85A Performance

Movies

When used for watching movies in a dark room, the Samsung QN85B is much better than the Q80B. Both use the same ADS panel that typically has low contras ratio However, local dimming feature of the QN85B can boost contrast ratio of the QN85B significantly, making it can produce deep black. On the other hand, local dimming of the Q80B can only improve its contrast ratio a bit, resulting in not very deep black. So, in a dark room, black produced by the QN85B looks really black while black produced by the Q80B looks tend to gray. So, in a dark room, dark scene looks more accurate on the screen of the QN85B than Q80B. Sadly, there is still some blooming around bright object on both, so, subtitle in movies may not look very focus.

Nevertheless, except their dark room performance, performance of the QN85B and Q80B of handling 24p movies equally great. Both can show 24p movies with judder-free, no matter the source. Additionally, although movies may appear to stutter due to its fast response time, you can easily solve this issue by enabling their Motion Interpolation or BFI mode. Additionally, both also have great 4K up-scaling engine, allowing you to watch low resolution movies almost as good as native 4K content.

Sports

The Samsung QN85B has better performance than the Q80B when used for watching sports in most bright rooms.  As we have discussed above, the QN85B has outstanding SDR peak brightness, making it is easily to overcome the glare in most bright rooms, even with much natural light. On the other hand, performance of the Q80B actually is also good. Although not as bright as the QN85B, but its SDR peak brightness is still bright enough to fight the glare in most bright rooms. Sadly, their reflection handling is not very good.  So, you should avoid to put them opposite the window with direct sunlight.

Meanwhile, ignoring the superiority of the QN85B in a bright room, their performance is almost similar in other aspects. Both have good an optional BFI mode and combined to their good pixel response time, this makes fast motion looks very smooth on their screen. So, fast sports like MotoGP, F1, etc looks clear on their screen with almost no motion blur. That is not only that, both also have good gray uniformity. So, large surface with uniform color like Hockey or Baseball can be displayed well on their screen without a lot of dirty screen effect. Overall, both are great TVs for sports, but the Q85B is better thanks to its brighter SDR peak brightness.

Video Games

For playing video games, their performance is also equally great. Besides they have good picture quality and good motion handling that make images of fast games looks smooth on their screen, they also have low input lags in Game mode. Making your act is in-sync with the images what you see. Both also already support VRR technology that compatible FreeSync, GSync, or HDMI Forum VRR. This will improve your gaming experience by reducing screen tearing, especially with a compatible game console. That is not only that, combination of 120 Hz panel and HDMI 2.1 also allows you to play most of high-quality games supported by modern game consoles like PS 5 or X Box X Series.

Meanwhile, compare among them, the Q85B is better than the Q80B. This is because the QN85B has dark room and bright room performance. But even so, except what influenced by their panel, their performance is not much different.

HDR Performance

Both supports most of HDR formats like HLD, HDR10, and HDR10+.  So, this gives you some option of watching HDR content. However, the QN85B is still better than the Q80B. They may have similar color reproduction and their color reproduction is great, especially for most current HDR. Additionally, their color gradient is also equally great. However, since the QN85B can produce much deeper black, it can show better shadow details of HDR images than the Q80B. On the screen of QN85B, shadow details of HDR images looks well without a lot of crushed black. On the other hand, since it cannot produce deep black, shadow details of HDR images doesn’t look very accurate on the screen of the Q80B.

Besides can show better shadow details, the SamsungQN85B also can show brighter highlights than the Q80B. Small highlight of HDR images is standout on the screen of the QN85B thanks to its outstanding HDR Peak Brightness. You need to know, with HDR content, the QN85B can get brighter than 1100 nits, which is great. On the other hand, although not as bright as the QN85B, the Q80B also has good HDR peak brightness, which is around 850 nits. This is bright enough to make small highlight pop, the way they should in HDR.

Conclusion

As we have discussed a lot above, overall, the Samsung QN85B is better than the Q80B. The use of Neo QLED panel makes the QN85B is better than the Q80B that uses traditional QLED panel. Besides it can deliver much brighter peak brightness on both SDR and HDR, it can also deliver much deeper black. Even for TVs with ADS panel, contrast ratio of the QN85B is really impressive. So, regardless they are used in a dark room or bright room, the QN85B is better than the Q80B.

Except what influenced by their panel performance, though, their performance is almost similar. Both have excellent motion handling, low input lags in Game Mode, and also have similar advanced features. And the other good point is that both have good side viewing angle, makes them are suitable for a lobby or a room with wide seating arrangement.

So, which is a better choice between them? If your main consideration of buying TV is picture quality, of course, the Samsung QN85B is better than the Q80B. However, in the market and with the same screen sizes, the Samsung QN85B is sold hundreds dollar more expensive than the Q80B. On the other hand, although not as good as the Samsung, performance of the Samsung Q80B is also very good for any usage. The decision now comes back to your own preferences and budget. If you have extra budget, the QN85B is certainly better choice. But if you have limited budget, performance of the Q80B is also not much worse.
