Samsung QN900B vs QN900A Review

Samsung QN900B is the top model of Samsung’s 2022 8K LED TV lineup. You need to know, in 2022, Samsung has launched 3 models of 8K TVs, which are QN800B, QN850B and QN900B. On the other hand, the QN900A is also the flagship of Samsung 8K TV in 2021 and also the predecessor of the QN900B. Except their panel technology, most features and technologies offered by the QN900B are almost similar to the Samsung QN95B, the flagship of Samsung’s 2022 4K TV lineup. Both uses One Connect Box instead of traditional inputs, mini-LED backlight, and new Samsung’s image processor called Neural Quantum processor. As the predecessor of the QN900B, the QN900A also has mini-LED backlight technology and One Connect Box. Nevertheless, it is powered by older images processor called Quantum 8K Processor.

In the market, both of the Samsung QN900B and QN900A comes in 3 screen sizes variant including 65 inches (QN55QN900B vs QN55QN900A), 75 inches (QN75QN900B vs QN75QN900A), and 85 inches (QN85QN900B vs QN85QN900A). And of course, with the same screen sizes, the QN900B is sold more expensive due to the existence of the QN900A in the market has been replaced by the QN900B. Samsung QN900B vs QN900A Side by Side Comparison

Design

The Samsung QN900B looks nearly identical to the QN900A predecessor that has a premium design. Both are well supported by a sleek stand with very little wobble. The stand is centered and the good point is that it doesn’t take up too much space. So, there will be no problem if you have small table and want to place them on the table, even if you have 85 inches variant. Additionally, the stand lifts the screen about 8.5 cm, so if you have a soundbar and want to place it on the table, it will not block the screen. Meanwhile, both of them have virtually bezel-less border, which is about 2 mm and have a thickness of 1.6 cm, including one of thinnest TV. They should look very slim and can sit flush against the wall if you want to mount them on the wall. Meanwhile, with One Connect box, there is only a single cable that connect on the TV as the inputs. You can attach it to the back of the stand or place it elsewhere if you prefer.

Dark Room Performance

Although both of the Samsung QN900B and QN900A use VA panel, but their native contrast ratio is relatively lower than most VA TVs, which is about 1500:1. However, both have local dimming feature that can boost their contrast ratio significantly, makes them are including LED TVs with the highest contrast ratio. And the good point is that their local dimming is always enable, so you don’t need to enable their local dimming to boos their contrast ratio. As the result, both of them can deliver very deep black, so in a dark room, blacks of images displayed on their screen looks remain deep even when they are displaying bright highlights.

That is not only that, their local dimming feature is also able to minimizing blooming excellently. So, even they are showing small highlight in a dark scene like subtitle in movies, there is almost no noticeable blooming around it. Unfortunately, unlike OLED TV, there is still black crush in a dark scene. But this should be hard to notice for most people. Meanwhile, compare among them, the Samsung QN900B brought improvement in black uniformity. When they are showing a dark scene with white crossline at the center, if on the screen of the QN900A, the blooming is pronounced around white crossline, while on the screen of the QN900B, the screen looks very uniform without noticeable clouding and there is less blooming around white crossline.

Bright Room Performance

There is no improvement in SDR peak brightness offered by the QN900B as a newer model over the predecessor. With SDR Real Scene and the setting Picture Mode on “Movie”, Brightness at “Max”, Color Tone is set to “Warm2”, and Local Dimming is set to “High”, the QN900A can hit about 850 nits while the QN900B hits about 725 nits. Nevertheless, with white window test, the QN900B can get a bit brighter, but their difference is not too significant. Both of the get their brightest peak brightness at 10 % white window where the Q900A get about 1325 nits while the QN900B gets about 1400 nits. On the contrary, they get the dimmest peak brightness at 100% white window where the QN900B gets about 420 nits while the QN900B gets about 390 nits. As we have known, the variations of their peak brightness is caused by their ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter). Ignoring their difference, their peak brightness is equally amazing, allowing them can easily combat the glare even in well-lit room. And combined to their excellent reflection handling, this makes their performance in a bright room is equally great. you don’t have to worry about being disturbed by the glare if you watch TV in a bright room.

Picture Clarity

Both of the Samsung QN900A and QN900B are powered by the same image processor, which is Neural Quantum Processor. Nevertheless, as a newer model, the QN900B comes with an updated version of Neural Quantum processor that makes it can process image a bit better, especially when they are displaying native 8K images. Like other 8K TVs, both of the Samsung QN900A and QN900B cannot display native 8K images perfectly. There’s some cross-hatching in the shadows, which is hard to see in the photo, but it’s noticeable in person. However, on the screen of the QN900B, it is less noticeable than on the screen of the QN900A.

Both also have good 8K upscaling engine. Low resolution content like DV movies with 480p resolution can be up-scaled well on 8K without obvious issue. And the higher resolution of the source, the 8K images produced will look more detail. A bit unfortunately, both of the Samsung QN900B and QN900A cannot display a pixel perfect 4K image. There are some minor upscaling artifacts and some dithering in the shadows. However, it is hard to notice and this actually is normal. Nevertheless, since the QN900A and QN900B are 8K TVs, a 4K signal has to be up-scaled to 8K.

Side Viewing Angle

Although both of the Samsung QN900A and QN900B Use VA panel, but their side viewing angle is not too bad. Both of them can maintain black level of images up to 70 degrees off center and front. So, even if you watch TV the side, black of image remain deep.  Additionally, although not as wide as their performance in maintaining black level, they are also able to maintain brightness level up to wide angle, which is about 50 degrees off center. This means, as long as you don’t watch TV from extremely side angle, brightness level of images will look very consistent.  But unfortunately, started at about 35 degrees off center, color will look washed-out. Overall, as long as you don’t watch TV from extremely side angle, the picture displayed on their screen will look as good as when viewed from the center and front.

Color Reproduction

Both of the Samsung QN900B and QN900A have great color gamut and their color gamut is very similar. Both have fantastic color coverage in DCI P3 color space used by most current HDR format like HDR10. In DCI P3 xy color space, the QN900A can cover about 93% while the QN900B cover about 90%. Meanwhile, in DCI P3 uv color space, the QN900A can cover about 96% while the QN900B cover about 94% of color space. This means, both of them can show almost all colors of HDR format mastered in DCI P3 color space accurately. Unfortunately, their color coverage in Rec.2020 used by next-gen HDR formats is limited. In Rec.2020 xy, the QN900A cover about 67% of color space and the QN900B cover about 65% of color space only while in Rec.2020 uv, both of them can cover about 71 % of color space.  You will not notice this issue with current HDR content, but the content that’s mastered in Rec.2020 is gaining in popularity, so in future, this may be a problem.

In addition to they have fantastic color gamut, both of them also have good color volume. They can show their wide color gamut at a wide range of luminance level. Both can produce deep dark shades of colors, as well as bright saturated color. Combination of their wide color gamut and good color volume makes HDR images can be shown vibrantly and colorfully on their screen.

Additionally, although not as good as most high-end Samsung’s TV, the Samsung QN900A and QN900B also have good color gradient. There may be still some little banding in almost all shades of colors, but this should be hard to notice. They also have a feature that can be used to reduce color banding called “Noise Reduction”. But keep in mind, enabling this feature may be able to reduce banding, but this can cause some loss of fine details in certain colors.

Motion Handling

There is an improvement offered by the Samsung QN900B over the predecessor QN900A on their pixel response time. The pixel response time of the Samsung QN900A is actually fairly low, which is about 10 ms. Meanwhile, response time of the QN900B is much lower which is about 7ms. With its response time, fast motion images displayed on the screen of the QN900A is actually pretty clear with almost no noticeable blur. Following fast moving object, there is only very little blur that should be hard to notice. Meanwhile, with lower response time, fast motion images displayed on the screen of the QN900B certainly looks clearer than on the screen of the QN900A. But as we have known, the lower pixel response time of the TVs, low frame rate content like 24p movies will appear to more stutter. And of course, when they are displaying 24p movies, the images will look more stutter on the screen of the QN900B than on the screen of the QN900A. Fortunately, this issue can be solved by interpolating them to higher frame rate like 60 Hz or 120 Hz or enabling their BFI (Black Frame Insertion).

To dim their backlight, the Samsung QN900B and QN900A both use PWM dimming system. Nevertheless, their dimming frequency is depending on the picture mode. The highest dimming frequency of them is 960 Hz where it is achieved when the picture mode is set to “Movie” or “Game” with the backlight is set between 0 – 30.  Meanwhile, set the backlight to 31 or higher will make their dimming change to 120 Hz. And when setting on other picture mode, their backlight always flicker at 120 Hz. And as we have known, both of them also have an optional BFI mode that can work with 60 Hz or 120 Hz content. This means, when playing 60 Hz content, their backlight will flicker at 60 Hz while when playing 120 Hz, their backlight will flicker at 120 Hz. This can help to improve their motion appearance by reducing persistence blur. Additionally, enabling this feature also can reduce image stuttering.

The other improvement offered by the Samsung QN900B over the QN900A is about their native refresh panel. If the Samsung QN900A has native 120 Hz refresh rate panel, the Samsung QN900B has 144 Hz native refresh rate panel. Along with the QN95B, they are the first commercial TV that come with native 144 refresh rate panel. Additionally, both also supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) that can improve your experience in playing gaming by reducing screen tearing effect. And their VRR is compatible with most VRR formats like HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync, and GSync. Additionally, their VRR also works across an extremely wide range of refresh rate, from about 20 Hz to their maximum refresh rate, which is 120 Hz for the QN900A and 144 Hz for the QN900B, whether they are playing 1080p, 1440p, or 4K content.

Inputs

As their inputs, both of the Samsung QN900A and QN900B are equipped with 4 HDMI ports, 3 USB ports, 1 Digital Audio Out (optical), and 1 Tuner IN (RF In). That distinguishes it from the others is that all of their inputs are housed on a separate box called “One Connect Box”. So, in addition to power cable, there is only a single cable that connect on the TV to the One Connect Box. Meanwhile, their HDMI ports supports some HDR formats like HLG, HDR10, and HDR10+. Sadly, they don’t support Dolby Vision like LG or Sony TVs. Additionally, their all of their HDMI ports also support most of HDMI format like HDMI 2.0, CEC, HDCP 2.2, and even HDMI 2.1. This makes them can accept HFR (High Frame Rate) content like modern games. Their tuner is also already support ATSC 3.0, the Next Gen TV broadcasting format.

One connect Box 2022

Discussing about their input lags, both of them have outstanding input lags in Game Mode and their input lags is very similar, except with 144Hz content where the QN900B doesn’t support. No matter the resolution, with 60 fps content, their input lag is about 10 ms while with 120 fps content, their input lag is about 6 ms. Special for the QN900B, with 144 Hz content, its input lags is also about 6 ms. This means, they are very responsive when used for playing any games, even for fast paced games that require fast reflexes. When you playing a game, what you act on your game pad will be in-synch with what you see on their screen.

Samsung QN900B vs QN900B Performance

Movies

Both of the Samsung QN900B and QN900A are great TVs for watching movies in a dark room. Their native contrast ratio may be relatively low due to the use of an anti-glare optical layer called “Ultra Viewing Angle”. But their local dimming feature can do a fantastic job in boosting their contrast ratio. This makes them can produce deep black. So, even if they are set in a pitch-dark room, a movie with a lot of dark scenes like horror or thriller genre will look detail. That is not only that, both of them also have great 8K up-scaling engine, which means even if you watch old movies like DVD movies with 480p resolution, you can still enjoy them in 8K quality with a lot of small details are preserved well. Fast action movies also looks smooth and clear on their screen thanks to their great motion handling. They also can remove judder at any source. So, no matter the source, this you can enjoy any movie with judder-free. And thanks to mini-LED backlight and local dimming feature, subtitle in movies looks excellent with almost no blooming around it. But it is still not a good as OLED TVs that have pixel dimming level.

Overall, the Samsung QN900A and QN900B are great TVs for watching movies. However, this doesn’t mean they don’t have a weakness. As we have discussed above, their fast pixel response time can cause low frame rate content appear to stutter. Enabling BFI mode or interpolating to higher frame rata may be able to reduce this issue, but it cannot be solved completely. Meanwhile, compare between them, the QN900B is a bit better than the predecessor thanks to its better contrast ratio, better local dimming performance.

Sports

When used for watching sports in a bright room, performance of the Samsung QN900A and QN900B also equally great. Combination of fast pixel response time and 60 Hz BFI mode makes fast sports looks very smooth with almost no motion blur. Additionally, both also have good SDR peak brightness, so even if you watch sports in a room with a lot of lights light living room or family room, glare should not be an issue. Additionally, although they use VA panel, they have good side viewing angle overall. Their side viewing angle coverage may be not as good as OLED TVs, but at least, as long as you don’t watch TV from extremely angle, the picture displayed on their screen will look very consistent. This is very good especially for you who often watch sport with a group of your family or friend.

A little shortcoming is about their gray uniformity. Overall, the gray uniformity is good, but not perfect. You may still notice a bit of dirty screen effect, which can be distracting during sports. Ut of course, this actually is not a serious issue.

Meanwhile, compare between them, the Samsung QN900B is a bit better than the predecessor QN900A. Its faster pixel response time makes fast sports looks a bit smoother and clearer on its screen than on the Screen QN900A. But their difference is not too significant.

Video Games

The Samsung QN900B and QN900A comes with a lot of features that can improve their performance when used for playing games. There are HDMI 2.1 that allows you to play High Quality games supported by a modern game console, ALLM that allows them can automatically switch to game mode when playing game. Additionally, they also support VRR technology that supports all three VRR formats including HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync, and GSync, allowing you to play game without screen tearing effect. And combination of excellent picture quality and a superb response time allowing you to play fast paced games with smooth picture quality and almost no motion blur following fast moving object.

That’s is not only that, both of them also have excellent input lags in game mode. The higher frame rate of content, their input lags is lower, allowing you to play any games responsively. So, even if you play fast paced games that requires fast reflexes, your finger’s action will be always in-sync with what you see on their screen.

Overall, both of them are excellent TV for playing video games. However, compare between them the Samsung QN900B is better than the QN900A. It has lower pixel response time than the predecessor, so fast paced games will look smoother on its screen than the predecessor. That is not only that, the QN900B also has native 144 refresh rate panel, allowing you to play high fame rate games supported by modern game console.

HDR Performance

The Samsung QN900B and QN900A supports the same HDR formats, which is HDR10, HLG, and HDR10+. This gives you some options to watch HDR content in different HDR formats. But sadly, until now, there is no Samsung TVs including QN900B and QN900A that supports Dolby Vision. So, you cannot enjoy Dolby Vision content with them. Although it already support HDR10+ that similar to Dolby Vision, but it is not as popular as Dolby Vision.

Meanwhile, talking about their HDR performance, both have great HDR performance. Both have excellent contrast ratio and great black uniformity, allowing them can show shadow details of HDR images excellently with almost no “black crush”. Additionally, both also have excellent HDR peak brightness. Except 50% and 10% white windows, both can hit above 1000 nits, which is about 1500 nits with 2 % and 10 % white window. This means, small highlight of HDR content will looks stand out on their screen, the way they should in HDR. Their color reproduction is also great. With color coverage more than 90% in DCI P3 color space, most current HDR will looks colorful on their screen. Whether they are show dark or bright scene, color of HDR images looks very accurate thanks to their good Color Volume. And although not as good as premium Sony TV, both also can handle banding fairly well, resulting in smooth color gradient.

And compare between them, the QN900B is still better than the QN900A. It has higher contrast ratio, makes shadow details of HDR images looks a bit better on its screen than on the QN900A. Nevertheless, except it, their performance is not much different.

Conclusion

As we have discussed a lot above, overall, the Samsung QN900B is a bit better than the QN900A thanks to some improvement offered by the QN900B over the predecessor. In addition to contrast ratio that makes it is a bit better when used in a dark room, the QN900B also brings an improvement in response time, resulting in smoother motion images. The other improvement offered by the QN900B is about its native refresh rate panel where it comes with 144 Hz native refresh rate panel, allowing it can play content with higher frame rate than the QN900A, especially when used for playing games.

However, ignoring the superiority of the QN900B over the predecessor, they are great TVs for mixed usage overall. Whether they are used for watching movies, TV Shows, Sports or playing games, in a dark room or bright room, their performance is really satisfying. Although there is not many native 8K content in the market, they have great 8K upscaling engine, allowing you to play lower resolution content in 4K quality with small details are still preserved well. Both also have good side viewing angle, so even if you have a wide seating arrangement for watching TVs, they are still suitable.

So, which is a better choice between them? As a newer model that brings some improvement, of course the QN900B is better than the QN900A. Nevertheless, its price is a bit more expensive than the QN900A. This is caused the price of the QN900A has dropped a lot. Nevertheless, the QN90A is also not a bad choice. It is the best alternative of the QN900B for you who want to save budget.
