Samsung QN95B vs S95B Review

Samsung QN95B and S95B are two of the flagship of Samsung’s 2022 TV lineup. The QN95B is the highest-end of Samsung’s 4K neo QLED TV in 2022. On the other hand, the Samsung S95B is the first OLED TV by Samsung. However, it doesn’t use white-OLED that found on most all OLED TVs in previous years or LG OLED TVs in this year. Instead of using white-OLED, the S95B uses the new OLED technology called QD-OLED that combine quantum dot filter and OLED panel. Along with Sony A95K, it is even the first OLED TV that uses QD-OLED panel.

As the top model and premium TVs of Samsung, both have plenty of advanced features and technology that may be not found on the lower series. Both are powered by Samsung’s new Neural Quantum Processor 4K that can deliver better up-scaling where the image is optimized on a scene-by-scene basis. Both of them are also optimized for games where there are a lot of features that help further improve their gaming performance like HDMI 2.1, VRR technology support, ALLM, extremely low input lags, etc. Special for the S95B, it even already support 144 Hz refresh rate for PC gamers. And as their smart TV platform, both run Tizen OS smart interface that has great selection of apps and games. Additionally, both also already support Google Duo that allows you to make video conference with up to 32 people directly on your Samsung TV by connecting a supported webcam.

Meanwhile, in the market, with the same screen size (QN55QN95B vs QN55S95B, QN65QN95B vs QN65S95B), the Samsung QN95B is sold about two hundred dollars more expensive than the S95B. However, their price certainly is not fixed and could still change at any time. Dark Scene and Dark Room Performance

As typical of OLED TV, performance of the Samsung S95B in a dark room is great. Thanks to its self-lighting pixels that can emit its own light, it has infinite contrast ratio, allowing it can produce perfect black level and perfect black uniformity. Additionally, its self-lighting pixel also makes it has pixel dimming level, which means the brightness of each pixel can be controlled individually. This makes it can display bright highlights beside perfect blacks with no blooming or haloing. However, unlike white-OLED where black produced by it looks really black without influenced by light condition of a room, on the screen S95B, black appears raised and tend to closer to purple if there is a light source on the screen. This means, it needs a perfect dark room in order to black produced by it looks really black.

 

On the other hand, the Samsung QN95B also has great dark room performance. The use of anti-glare optical layer called “Ultra Viewing Angle” may make its native contrast ratio is not as high as most LED TV with VA Panel, which is about 3500:1 only. But it has great local dimming feature that can boost its contrast ratio significantly up to 20000:1. Additionally, its local dimming is also able to improve its black uniformity. As the result, black in dark scene looks very deep and with the same depth at any location on its screen, even if it is set in a pitch-dark room. Meanwhile, when showing highlight in dark scene, there may be still a bit of blooming around it, but this is not very noticeable if you watch TV from the front. Blooming will be more noticeable if you watch TV from the side.

Overall, the Samsung QN95B has great dark room performance. But of course, it cannot beat OLED TV including the S95B that has infinite contrast ratio.

Bright Scene and Bright Room Performance

While in a dark room the Samsung S95B is better, in a bright room, the Samsung QN95B is better. With real SDR content, the S95B hits about 425 nits only. On the other hand, the QN95B can get much brighter, which is about 1000 nits. Meanwhile, with white window test, the S95B hits its brightest peak brightness on 2%, 10%, and 25% white window where it can get about 475 nits. With white window test, the QN95B can even get much brighter where on 2% white window it get about 1800 nits while on 10 % white window, it get about 1875 nits. Both may have ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter) that automatically dim their brightness when the bright area increase. So, when the entire screen is bright, the S95B get about 200 nits only while the QN95B gets about 560 nits. With peak brightness reached by them and combined to their excellent reflection handling, can be ascertained that both can overcome the glare in a bright room fairly well. But of course, in a very bright room, the QN95B is better thanks to its outstanding peak brightness.

But as we have discussed above, special for the Samsung S95B, its black will appear raised and looks closer to purple when there is a bright source on its screen. This means, in a bright room, black of images will look closer to purple than really black. So, although its SDR peak brightness may be bright enough to fight the glare in a bright room, but it is better when it is used in dim or dark room.

Picture Clarity

Since they are powered by the same processor, performance of the Samsung QN95B and S95B in processing images signal is not much different. Thanks to Neural Quantum Processor 4K, both can deliver better upscaling image where they are optimized scene-by scene. So, whether you play DVD movies, Blu-ray movies, or other lower resolution content, you can enjoy them in 4K resolution without losing a lot of fine details. And the higher resolution of the source, small details will be preserved better, making images displayed looks closer to native 4K. And when they are showing native 4K content, they can show them perfectly without any dithering or sub-pixel artifact.

Side Viewing Angle

One of the advantages offered by Samsung S95B is its nearly perfect side viewing angle. Its side viewing angle coverage is even better than OLED TV with white-OLED. As we have known, previously, all OLED TVs has great viewing angle coverage. They can maintain black level and brightness level up to extremely wide angle. So, even if you watch TV from the side, black of images displayed on their screen still as deep as when viewing from the center and front and they don’t also look dimmer like on the screen of LED TV. However, they cannot maintain color accuracy, so from the side, color look washed-out. Meanwhile, with QD-OLED, it brings an improvement that becomes the weakness of white-OLED. It can maintain color accuracy up to about 70 degrees off center and front. So, when you watch even from extremely wide angle, color of images displayed on their screen looks as accurate as from the front and center.

On the other hand, side viewing angle of the Samsung QN95B is not as good as the Samsung S95B. It also even not as good as white OLED TV. But with an anti-glare optical layer called “Ultra Viewing Angle”, its viewing angle coverage can be said good. It has better viewing angle coverage than VA TVs, even IPS TVs. It may be able to maintain the depth of black level up to about 70 degrees off center and front, but started at about 45 degrees off center, the image displayed on its screen will look dimmer. Additionally, started at about 40 degrees, color shifts and is washed-out. So, when viewed from the side, color image will not look as accurate as when viewed from the center and front.

Color Reproduction

Both of them can deliver wide color gamut, which is great for HDR content. However, compare between them, the Samsung S95B can deliver wider color gamut than the QN95B.  Color coverage of the Samsung S95B is exceptional. In DCI P3 color space, its color coverage is perfect where it cover 100% of color space. This means, it is great for most current HDR content that mastered in DCI P3 like HDR10 content where all color can be shown properly. Additionally, their color coverage in Rec.2020 where next-gen HDR format like HDR10+ are mastered, its color coverage is also great. In rec.2020xy, it can cover around 87% while in Rec.2020uv, it cover around 91%. And that is great, it can show its wide color gamut at their entire brightness range. This means, dark shades of colors can be shown well as well as very bright colors. But as we have discussed above, black will appears raised if there is a bright source on its screen. Indirectly, it can cause dark colors cannot be shown accurately.

On the other hand, although not as good as the S95B, color coverage of the Samsung QN95B in DCI P3 color space is also great. In DCI P3xy, it cover around 90% while in DCI P3 uv, it cover around 94%. Its color coverage in DCI P3 may be not as perfect as the S95B, but it is wide enough to makes most current HDR looks colorful and life-like on its screen. Meanwhile, like most TVs in 2022, their color coverage in Rec.2020 is only decent. In Rec.2020 xy, it cover around 65% while in Rec.2020uv, it cover around 72%. This actually is only a bit worse then white-OLED TV. Overall, it may wide enough to show most colors of HDR images that mastered in Rec.2020 like HDR10+ content, but some certain colors may be not able to be shown properly, which causes lose of fine details.

Motion Handling

As typical of OLED TVs, the Samsung S95B has nearly-instantaneous pixel response time that makes fast motion looks incredibly clear with almost no blur following fast-moving object. Additionally, there is also no overshoot artifact like inverse ghosting, which is great. Meanwhile, the blur that may be visible is more caused by persistence due to sample and hold nature of OLED panel technology. On the other hand, although not as low as the S95B, the Samsung QN95B also has excellent pixel response time, which is about 7 ms. As the result, fast moving images looks very clear on its screen. Following fast moving object, there is only a very short trail that should be hard to notice and there is only very little overshoot. But just like on S95B, its fast response time still results in persistence blur. Additionally, it also can cause low frame rate content like 24p movies appears to stutter.

From here we can get the conclusion that with faster response time, the S95B can deliver smoother and clearer fast motion images with less blur than the QN95B. But on the other hand, its faster response time makes persistence blur is more noticeable and low frame rate content appears to more stutter on its screen than on the screen of the QN95B.  Fortunately, both have an optional BFI (Black Frame Insertion) mode that can help to reduce persistence blur and image stuttering.

You need to know, to dim their screen, the Samsung QN95B uses PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) dimming system. However, their dimming frequency varies depending on the picture mode setting.  The highest possible of its dimming frequency is 960 Hz where it is reached when it is set to Movie Mode with a backlight setting below 38. Meanwhile, in most setting, its dimming frequency drops to 120 Hz. And since its screen flicker at a such high frequency, this certainly makes screen flickering is almost no noticeable. On the other hand, since the Samsung S95B doesn’t have backlight, it doesn’t use PWM dimming system to dim its screen. The result, just like the S95B, its screen is almost flicker-free.

But as we have known, a screen flickering that match to the frequency of frame rate of content or called “Black Frame Insertion” is required to reduce persistence blur.  And for this case, both of them support an optional BFI (Black Frame Insertion). The difference, the QN95B support both 60 Hz and 120 Hz mode that means it can flicker at 60 Hz when playing 60 fps content and flicker at 120 Hz when playing 120 Hz fps content. On the other hand, the Samsung S95B supports 60 Hz BFI mode only that means it can flicker at 60 Hz only even if they are playing 120 Hz content. This means, when it is displaying 120 fps conte, enabling its BFI mode precisely can cause some duplications.

The Samsung QN95B is the first TV that has native 144 Hz refresh rate panel. On the other hand, like most TVs in 2022, the Samsung S95B has native 120 Hz refresh rate panel. This means, the QN95B can properly play any content with frame rate up to 144 Hz while the S95B support any content with frame rate up to 120 Hz. Additionally, they also support VRR technology that work across their wide range of their refresh rate, which is 20 – 120 Hz for the S95B and 20 Hz to 144 HZ for the QN95B. As we have known, VRR technology can improve their gaming screen experience by removing screen tearing. Additionally, they also supports LFC (Low Frame Rate Compensation) where it will be automatically enabled when the frame rate drops very low, so you still will not see screen tearing.

Overall, Samsung S95B is better in handling blur thanks to its nearly-instantaneous pixel response time. But on the other hand, the Samsung QN95B also has low enough response time that can make it ca handle motion blur fairly well. Meanwhile, the advantage of the QN95B is that it has higher native refresh rate panel and supports both 60 Hz and 120 Hz BFI mode.

Input

As their main connectivity, both of the Samsung S95B and QN95B are equipped with 4 HDMI ports. Both also have USB ports where the S95B has 2 USB ports and the QN95B has 3 USB ports. Additionally, both also have 1 Tuner In that supports ATSC 3.0, 1 Digital Audio Out (optical), and 1 Ethernet port. For wireless connectivity, they both also have built in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Special for the QN95B, it also has Analog Audio Out (3.5 mm Mini-Jack). Meanwhile, the difference between them is about the location of their inputs. For the S95B, all of their inputs are located on the back of its main panel. Meanwhile, for the QN95B, all of their inputs are located on separate box called “One Connect Box”. So, there is only one single cable that goes on the TV from “One Connect Box”.

Discussing about their HDMI support, all of their HDMI ports supports most formats including HDMI 2.0 Full Bandwidth, HDCP 2.2, CEC, ALLM, and even HDMI 2.1. Their HDMI ARC is on HDMI 3 where it also supports eARC, allowing them can passthrough high quality audio format. Their HDMI ports also supports most of HDR formats including HDR10, HLG, and HDR10+. But sadly, until now, there is no Samsung TV that supports Dolby Vision including QN95B and S95B. And since the QN95B has native 144 HZ refresh rate panel, it supports all common resolution up to 4K @ 144 Hz. On the other hand, since it has native 120 Hz panel, it only supports commonly resolution up to 4K @ `120 Hz.

Meanwhile, discussing about their input lags, the Samsung QN95B and S95B has very low input lag in Game Mode. No matter the resolution, with 60 fps games, input lag of the S95B is about 10 ms while the QN95B is about 11 ms. Meanwhile, with 120 Hz games, their input lag is even much lower, which is about 5 ms for the S95B and about 6 ms for the QN95B. And special for the QN95B, its input lag with 144 Hz content is about 5 ms. Overall, the S95B may have a bit lower input lag than the QN95B, but the difference is not very noticeable. This means, their input lags is low enough to play any games without delay. So, even if you play fast paced games that require fast reflect, what you cat on your game pad still will be in-sync with you see on their screen.

Samsung S95B vs QN95B Performance

Movies

The Samsung QN95B and S95B are great TVs for watching movies in a dark room. The S95B has infinite contrast ratio and nearly perfect black uniformity while the Q95B has outstanding contrast ratio and excellent black uniformity. Additionally, the S95B also has pixel dimming level while the QN95B has excellent local dimming feature. All of them may makes performance of the Samsung QN95B in a dark room is not as great as the S95B. But at least, it can show accurate dark scene without a lot of “crushed black”. That is not only that, its great local dimming feature also make subtitle in movies appear focused without a lot of blooming around it. On the other hand, just like other OLED TV, performance of the S95B in a dark room is undoubtedly. But as we have discussed above, black of the S95B will appear raised when there is a bright source on its screen. So, it require a perfect black room to get the maximum performance of the S95B in showing dark scene.

Additionally, both also have good motion handling, making fast action movies appears smoothly on their screen. That is not only that, no matter the source, they can show any movies with judder-free. Both also can upscale lower resolution content to 4K excellently. So, even if you play DVD movies, watch HD movies on Cable TV, or Blu Ray movies, you can enjoy them in nearly 4K resolution without losing a lot of fine details. But of course, there is not a perfect TV. Their very fast response time may make motion appears clearly and smoothly, but since movies usually has 24p of frame rate, it may appear to stutter on their screen. But although cannot be removed completely, at least, enabling their BFI mode or interpolating them to higher frame rate can reduce this issue.

Compare between them, the S95B certainly is better than the QN95B, especially when you watch movies in a dark room. But in bright room, the QN95B is better thanks to its brighter SDR peak brightness, On the other hand, from the S95B side, its black level rise in a bright room makes dark scene of movies looks a bit less accurate.

Sports

Both of the Samsung S95 and QN95B are also great TVs for watching sports in a bright room. Both have great motion handling, making fast sports appears clearly on their screen with almost no motion blur. Both also have good gray uniformity. This makes sports that has large area with uniform color like baseball or hockey appear smoothly on their screen without a lot of dirty screen effect. Additionally, their 60 Hz BFI mode also can further improve motion appearance in sport like on MotoGP or F1. And that is no less important is about their side viewing angle. Since both have wide viewing angle coverage, you don’t need to worry if you watch a big game with a group of your family or friend because this ensure all of you will get the best viewing, even for you who sit at the side.

Meanwhile, compare between them, as long as you don’t watch sport very bright room with a lot of light or window, the Samsung S95B is better. It has faster response time, making sports appears smoother on its screen. Additionally, it also has perfect viewing angle coverage, allowing all of you to watch sports with the same picture quality, even for you who sit on the side. That is not only that, its gray uniformity is also better than the QN95B, allowing it show large surface with less dirty screen effect. Video Games

When used for playing video games, their performance is also equally great. Thanks to their excellent motion handling, fast paced games appears smoothly and clearly on their screen. Additionally, both also have low input lags, allowing you to play any games responsively without any delay. That is not only that, both of them also have a lot of features that further improve your experience in playing games. Their HDMI port support ALLM that allows it can automatically switch to Game mode once there is a signal from a game console, so you don’t need to change to game mode manually when you will play game. Both of the Samsung S95B and QN95B also support VRR technology that work across their wide frame rate range, allowing you to play any games with screen tearing free. Even if the frame rate of games drops very low, their LFC is automatically enabled, ensuring you still won’t see screen tearing. Both of them also have great HDR performance. Both support most of current HDR format like HDR10, HLG, and HDR10+. Sadly, until now, there is no Samsung TV including the S95B and QN95B that support Dolby Vision, so you cannot watch Dolby Vision Content on both. They may already support HDR10+, HDR format that has similar specification and algorithm to Dolby Vision. However, Dolby Vision is more popular than HDR10+. This means, Dolby Vision content is more widely available in the market than HDR10+.

Meanwhile, discussing about their HDR performance, they are equally great. The Samsung S95B is more superior in showing shadow details of HDR images thanks to its infinite contrast ratio, pixel dimming level, and nearly perfect black. Additionally, it also has better color volume and wider color gamut, making HDR images looks more colorful on its screen than on the screen of the QN95B, especially for HDR content that mastered in Rec.2020 like HDR10+. That is not only that, the Samsung S95B also has a bit smooth color gradient, making color gradient of HDR images displayed on its screen looks a bit smoother. Until here, the S95B is superior. And although not as great as the S95B, performance of the QN95B is actually also great, whether about its performance in showing shadow details or its color reproduction.

Meanwhile, the advantage of the Samsung QN95B is about its HDR peak brightness. The QN95B has incredible HDR peak brightness where it can show highlights of HDR images at about 1750 nits. The larger bright screen may be not as bright as bright areas, but this still bright enough to deliver impressive HDR experience. On the other hand, HDR peak brightness of the Samsung S95B may be not as bright as the QN95B, but it can still show small bright area at 1000 nits. This is more than enough make highlight of HDR images pop. Can be said, it is the brightest OLED TV that ever.

Conclusion

As premium TV, deservedly, they have impressive picture quality. But the question certainly is not about how their picture quality. So, whether you use them for watching movies, sports, HDR content, or playing video games, their performance is equally great. But the question is which is better choice between them? Of course, this should consider what will they be used for and where will they be placed?

And as we have discussed a lot above, with its impressive brightness level, the Samsung QN95B is better when used in a bright room, though its performance in a dark room is also great. On the other hand, in a bright room, performance of the S95B is not very good. Its SDR peak brightness may be bright enough to fight the glare in most bright room. Additionally, its HDR peak brightness is actually also bright enough to make highlight pop, even in a bright room. However, since its black level appear raised when there is a bright source on its screen, it will be better if it is used in a dim or dark room only, especially when you like watch movies. Meanwhile, if you have a plan to use it in a dark room or dim room without a lot of lights, the S95B certainly is better. But ignoring the light condition of the room, the S95B is better than the QN95B overall.

Meanwhile, discussed about which TV is more future-proof, the answer certainly is also depending on the purpose. If your focus is on HDR experience, of course the Samsung S95B is more future-proof thanks to its impressive color coverage in Rec.2020. However, if your focus is on gaming, the Samsung QN95B is more future-proof since it has native 144 Hz refresh rate panel and it is the only TV that has 144 Hz refresh rate panel. For now, you can get benefit with PC games only because there is not game console that support 144 Hz gaming. But in the future, who knows?
